  • Dreaming of O'ahu

    by Chloë and Xophé

John Lennon once said: "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." We dreamed a dream together with our parents. Our dream was to move to O’ahu, Hawai’i and to live there for the rest of our lives. Moving there has always been a very big project, so this year we decided to go to O’ahu on vacation.

Early in the morning of June 30 we went in our car to Schiphol, the Airport in Amsterdam. We checked in our luggage in and after one hour of waiting we left in our plane. We were very scared in the beginning because we had never flown before. But after a while, when we were already high in the sky, we felt safe again. The views from up above were so amazingly beautiful. After a total of 39 hours, including delays in Houston, we finally arrived at the International Airport of Honolulu. We collected our luggage, rented a car and drove to Waikiki where our rental apartment was located.

As soon as we had unpacked our luggage and settled in the apartment we just put our swimmers on, grabbed a towel and walked to Waikiki beach; from our apartment it was only a 5 minute walk. We swam in the blue ocean for an hour or two and it all felt like home already. Soon after our first day in O’ahu was coming to an end, yet there was plenty to come over the next few days. Here are a few of our favourites.

For the first time in our lives we experienced the 4th of July. In the morning, we went to Kailua to see a parade with bands, veterans marching in units accompanied by school kids, horses and Hawai’ian Dignitaries. After watching the parade, we went on to Turtle Bay to see Ron Artis II perform live and in the evening we headed back to our apartment and prepared ourselves to for Ala Moana Beach Park from where we watched the fireworks. They were simply incredible! We were just sitting on the beach, having fun and gazing up into the night sky. It was such a beautiful experience.

With Google Earth Streetview we had already been to Hawai’i many times and one day we discovered a road called Tantalus Drive by accident. This is a road that leads up into the mountains, a truly gorgeous drive. And so during our stay we drove along this road to see what it would be like in reality. Well, we cannot describe properly how beautiful the views were, but we stopped at every corner of the road to take in the views.

While we spent our time in O’ahu, we had the pleasure of experiencing a lot of festivals. The Prince Lot Hula Festival, the Ukulele Festival and the Na Hula Festival as well as the China Uemura Longboard Surfing Classic, only to name a few. Needless to say that we enjoyed them all. And the most beautiful thing about all of the festivals was that you could really feel the ‘Aloha vibe’. You would take your beach towel, sit on the grass, eat pineapples and take in the festivals. Truly a very amazing experience.

Important to point out is that Hawai’i with its nature is very, very beautiful. All year around everything is green. Because of these great weather conditions there are many hiking possibilities in mountains, botanical gardens and along old volcanoes. We hiked Diamond Head, on the top of an old volcano with stunning views. We were able to see all of Waikiki and blessed enough to see the sun rise above it all.

When we were younger we always dreamed of walking along Waikiki Beach and watching the many sunrises and sunsets in O’ahu. Well, I guess our dreams came true. And now we dream of living there for the rest of our lives.
